This year, with the confinement, many French people listened to music on streaming platforms, according to a study by the record union.

And it was the rappers who benefited the most, taking advantage of a greater habit of younger people for music online.

The containment has benefited online music platforms.

According to a study by the Snep (National Union of Phonography Edition, or record union), 61% listened to streaming music more during periods of confinement.

And the most popular titles are those posted online by rappers.

The number one song on Spotify, this year in France, is called

Bande

Organisé, a title that brings together a dozen Marseille rappers in the 13'Organisé collective.

Rapper Jul, a member of the Marseille collective, set a record almost two weeks ago.

His 14th album,

Loin du monde

, had the best start in the world, over the period from December 18 to 20, ahead of a certain… Paul McCartney.

We understand that rap has taken full advantage of this boom in music streaming.

It must be said that it is especially the youngest who listen to rap and that the under 25s represent 40% of users of streaming platforms.

"Rappers are widely listened to on streaming platforms"

That said, during the lockdown, everyone got into it.

Between January and June, streaming increased by 20%.

It now represents three quarters of the turnover of recorded music.

"Music streaming is doing well. It has been growing rapidly for 5 years in France and around the world. And this was still the case in 2020," confirms Alexandre Lasch, secretary general of Snep.

"Rappers Ninho, Hatik, PLK, are among many others, artists who marked the year. And they are indeed massively listened to on streaming platforms."

Listens that are now counted to identify the best sales of albums.

And this year, in the top 10, seven are those of rappers.
