Among the eternal part of casualties on account of the coronavirus, one more victim: the cinema, the Spanish and the other.

The year that is ending is now officially (although the figures are still provisional since the Comscore count remains to be completed) the worst in history in Spain since there are records.

The almost 170 million euros collected in 2020 contrast with violence even with the 624 that completed the box office of Spanish cinemas last year, when, finally, it was recovering from the successive crises associated with piracy, new habits or simple crisis.

The same.

Well, although a bad figure was expected, it confirms that everything that is liable to get worse ends up being even worse.

The 28 million viewers who have come to theaters in Spain when the pandemic has allowed it, are less than half the worst year to date: in 2013 there were 78 million tickets sold.

If you like, and although it is difficult to be somewhat optimistic (even a little), not everything is bad.

Or everything is bad for Spanish cinema.

The most watched film in Spain is Spanish.

Something that was not seen since

'8 Basque surnames'

.

The almost 13 million euros collected from

'Father there is no more than one 2'

place it ahead of '

1917

' or, the great hope of the cinemas after the confinement, '

Tenet

', by Christopher Nolan.

The first with 9.3 and the second with 7.5 remains at an obvious distance.

Keep in mind that Santiago Segura's film was one of the first to contravene the conservative tendency of all popular films to delay its release until after the disaster.

With the closure accomplished and with the cinemas at half throttle due to the limited capacity measures, she dared, the cinemas thanked her and triumphed.

The proceeds of the sequel represent almost a third of all that Spanish cinema has been able and capable of in a fateful year.

And here, if you look on the less bad side, another good news.

The 42 million euros collected by Spanish cinema represent 24.7 of the screen share.

That is, one in four viewers who dared to challenge the Covid did so to see Spanish cinema.

Such a percentage represents the second highest of the decade.

In 2014, when the '

8 Basque surnames',

the quota shot up to 25.4.

And so far everything good.

The rest is between very bad and even worse.

The rest of the combinations that you want to do give to make you sick for a season.

Spanish cinema has collected half of 2019 (42 compared to 94).

That in addition to making good his worst records of the century: those of 2013, with 70.2 million euros;

and those of 2000 itself, with 53.7 million euros, according to the ICAA.

The sequel to Segura, its box office performance being exceptional given the circumstances, has also been below the first, which was the most watched Spanish film last year.

Of course, for very little: its 2.3 million viewers and its already mentioned 13 million euros have stayed very close to the 2.4 million viewers and 14.2 million euros of the first installment.

From the Federation of Cinemas of Spain (FECE) all the effort is dedicated to not getting depressed.

In his reasoning it weighs that the '

majors

' have withdrawn their great titles and that, despite everything, in Spain they have only closed four cinemas.

"There is confidence that we will recover because nothing that has happened is structural:

Covid has been the culprit and when it happens everything will return to its being. We are convinced that people will want to return to the cinema. We do not believe that there will be changed people's habits ", says Borja de Benito as spokesman for the cinemas.

For now, and waiting for what happens, the truth is that the figure is impressive because nothing similar has been seen since 1967 that there is data.

The first crises are located in the late 80s and early 90s.

In 1989 and 1991, only 85 million viewers went to the cinema

and there were years when the share of Spanish cinema dropped to 8% (1989, 1993 and 1994) .

Since 2000, the lowest share has been recorded precisely at the turn of the millennium (10%) and the smallest box office in 2013 and 2014 (78 and 88 million viewers).

The 28 million entries now are a thing of the Covid.
