As at the end of December, the Médiamétrie institute unveiled the list of the best TV audiences of the past year.

And it is clear that 2020 and its news, to say the least, unexpected to shake up the audiences, where we usually find the same things in the best places from year to year. 

There was a time when the list of the best TV audiences of the year consisted almost exclusively of football matches, series and some entertainment.

But that was before 2020. The Médiamétrie institute unveiled, as at the end of December, the best audiences of the year.

Its results indeed show to what extent the health crisis has transformed the daily life of the French, even in their consumption of television.

Of the 15 best audiences of 2020, 13 relate to government announcements and current events around Covid-19, the record for the year being the announcement of deconfinement by Emmanuel Macron on April 13.

That evening, 36 million French people were in front of his speech, broadcast on eleven channels simultaneously.  

Global audience on the rise

However, there are two survivors of the health crisis in this list of the best audiences of the year: the Enfoirés show and the Champions League final Paris Saint-Germain / Bayern Munich.

More generally, the TV audience increased in 2020. This is also one of the consequences of the two lockdowns and curfews, which have pushed many French people to spend more time in front of their post, especially in evening.
