In Switzerland, hundreds of tourists from Great Britain removed themselves from an ordered quarantine, some overnight.
Hoteliers in Verbier, a ski resort in the canton of Valais, which is popular with British winter tourists, had noticed that the breakfast trays placed in front of the room doors had not been touched, said Jean-Marc Sandoz, spokesman for the Verbier municipality of Bagnes, the German press agency on Sunday.
The place identified 420 guests from Great Britain who had to be quarantined before Christmas.
These included Swiss people living there.
About 50 people left immediately.
Of the 370 others, fewer than a dozen were still there on Sunday.
"We understand their anger," said Sandoz.
He sharply criticized the sudden quarantine requirement for travelers from Great Britain.
The communities received no help to implement the provisions.
On December 20, Switzerland stopped all flights from Great Britain and South Africa because new and allegedly more contagious variants of the corona virus had been detected in the countries.
Authorities ordered all those who had entered since December 14 to be quarantined retrospectively for ten days from their arrival date.
The municipal administration initially tried to arrange return flights for the guests, but when it was clear that only those who had demonstrably completed ten days of quarantine were allowed to board, those affected waved off.

According to Sandoz, some guests have now reported from neighboring France.
The ski stations there are closed, but the British can at least get some fresh air.
