In a letter circulated to the media, five owners of 200 sports shops located in French ski resorts believe that with the closure of the ski lifts until at least January, “their season, which has barely started, is now already finished ”.

In this text, entitled "The mountain in bankruptcy", the five co-signatories feel powerless in the face of the "agony" of the mountain, although they "did everything possible" to open their businesses "with respect. health protocols ”.

Guarantors of around a thousand jobs across the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, they say they do not believe in a "providential reopening" of the ski lifts on January 7, this date seeming to them "irremediably compromised with regard to developments. of the health context ”.

- 95% of turnover on the last weekend

"It is clear today that, despite the communication efforts, the stations are empty", underline these business leaders who explain that they came out "bloodless from winter 2020, cut by a third of their activity".

“The winter season slips away and losses accumulate with the passing days […].

If only one figure should be retained, it is that of -95% of turnover over the last weekend ”, that of December 19, they specify.

A world leader at half mast

The co-signers of the text also recall that in addition to "entire territories", it is also "families of seasonal workers" who will find themselves, "very soon devastated" and "on the floor".

"Unless the public authorities decide to save this flagship of the French economy, world leader in this sector, by appropriate long-term measures ... Tomorrow, it will be too late, because the mountains are dying today" , they conclude.

“We do not question health decisions.

But we cannot close and let our businesses die because jobs are in danger, ”says Francis Charbonnel, the owner of ten stores behind the initiative.

“For sports shops, everything is played between December 15 and April 30.

We will restart in February after the traditional low in January with a second year in a row cut by almost half, ”he laments.
