This Friday, France has 62,427 dead from the coronavirus, according to figures published on the government site, or 159 more in the last 24 hours.

At the same time, there are 20,262 new cases of Covid in the territory, far from the target of 5,000 positive patients set by the government in mid-December.

Nevertheless, hospitalizations and resuscitations are down slightly since the last score.

There are 247 fewer patients in hospitals and 27 fewer severe cases in intensive care units.

First case in France of the variant appeared in the United Kingdom

A first case of contamination by the variant of the Covid_19 virus that appeared in the United Kingdom was detected on Friday in France, in Tours (center), announced the Ministry of Health.

He is a French resident in the United Kingdom, who is asymptomatic and has been isolated at his home, according to the statement.

A similar case has been reported in Germany, and another in Lebanon in recent days.

The first vaccinations on Sunday 

The first doses of the vaccine designed by the Pfizer and BioNTech laboratories will arrive in France on Saturday.

For the moment, it is only "a few dozen" of patients who will receive their injection on Sunday, specified the Minister of Health, Olivier Véran.

The vaccination campaign will follow a "prioritization strategy" to inject the anti-Covid vaccine to frail people in the first place. 

Two establishments were chosen: the long-term care unit of the René-Muret hospital (AP-HP) in Sevran, in Seine-Saint-Denis, and the geriatric center of Champmaillot, which depends on the Dijon CHU.

On the other hand, there will be no third establishment concerned from Sunday, contrary to what had been envisaged.

More than 25 million cases in Europe, new confinements

More than 78.6 million cases of contamination have been officially diagnosed worldwide, with more than 25 million cases in Europe, according to the latest AFP count.

Austria, Scotland and Northern Ireland again confine their populations on Saturday, Boxing Day and on the eve of the start of vaccination campaigns against Covid-19 in the 27 countries of the European Union.

Ireland and Italy, for their part, re-defined before the holidays.

Draconian new restrictions (closing "non-essential" businesses, limiting or banning social contacts, etc.) come into force on Saturday in Scotland and Northern Ireland.

1.73 million deaths worldwide 

The United States is the most affected country in terms of both deaths and cases, with 329,106 deaths for 18,655,012 cases, according to the count from Johns Hopkins University.

At least 6,298,082 people have been declared cured.

After the United States, the countries most affected are Brazil with 189,982 deaths and 7,423,945 cases, India with 147,092 deaths (10,146,845 cases), Mexico with 121,172 deaths (1,362,564 cases), and the 'Italy with 70,900 deaths (2,009,317 cases).

The pandemic has killed at least 1.73 million people worldwide since the end of December, according to an assessment established by AFP from official sources Thursday morning.

The United States remains the most bereaved country with 326,232 dead, followed by Brazil (189,220 dead), India (146,756), Mexico (120,311) and Italy (70,395).
