Let's start with the end: Carl Billich, born on July 23, 1911 in Vienna as the second child of Elisabeth and Carl Billich Sr., died of natural causes on October 23, 1989 in Reykjavík.

Eight days later, on October 31st, a memorial service took place in the overcrowded cathedral, the oldest church in the city.

Billich's friends then moved to the “Saga” hotel to exchange memories over coffee and cake.

Daughter Sigurborg, now 69, remembers: “It was a nice farewell.

We laughed a lot."

Thuridur Billich, who outlived her husband Carl by 15 years, rests with him in a grave on the edge of the cemetery in Fossvogur, a district of Reykjavík that is valued by artists.
