What if a climate bomb was under our feet?
In the northern hemisphere, a layer of ice represents 25% of the land surface.
This is called permafrost, or permafrost in English.
This term refers to soils that have been frozen for at least two years, composed of frozen water, minerals and organic matter.
The problem is, these soils would also lock in high-dose carbon and mercury, and all of that could soon escape into the atmosphere.
