The Beijing News previously reported that on February 25, 2007, self-employed Yang Zhongfen in Yingshang County, Anhui received a notice from the police that the body of his son Zhou Yang was found in a public toilet in Jiangdianzi Town.
The appraisal document showed that Zhou Yang's neck injury caused mechanical suffocation.
The case has not been solved.
Until 2010, a suspect in a theft case was reported to the judiciary, and his accomplices Zuo Degang, Chen Yongxuan, and Yang Shiqing were suspected of killing Zhou Yang.
On October 29, 2013, the case was heard in Anhui High Court.
The court found that Zuo Degang was guilty of intentional homicide and sentenced to death; for theft, he was sentenced to life imprisonment.
Chen Yongxuan was sentenced to death with a suspended death sentence, and Yang Shiqing was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
After the judgment of the first instance, Zuo Degang filed an appeal, and the Anhui Provincial Higher People's Court sent it back for a retrial.
In the following 10 years, the case went through 6 trials, of which Zuo Degang was sentenced to death 5 times.
In May 2020, the Anhui Provincial Higher People's Court made a final judgment to revoke Zuo Degang's death sentence and sentenced him to nine years in prison for theft.
After that, Yang Zhongfen appealed to the court many times and asked the court to file a case for review.
On July 6, 2020, Yang Zhongfen received a notice from the Anhui Provincial Higher People's Court for the review of the case. The retrial of Zhou Yang's murder will start. Zuo Degang was arrested again 43 days after his release.
On November 25, the Anhui Provincial Higher People's Court opened a retrial on Zuo Degang's intentional homicide case, but the judgment was not pronounced in court due to the serious circumstances of the case.
