On December 23, 53 new cases of new coronary pneumonia were confirmed in Hong Kong, including 20 local cases of unknown origin.

Zhang Zhujun, director of the Infectious Diseases Division of the Centre for Health Protection of the Department of Health of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government, announced that the genetic sequence of two imported cases from the United Kingdom was found to be consistent with the variant virus that appeared in the United Kingdom recently.

Zhang Zhujun revealed that the two cases were all students who came to Hong Kong on the 7th and 13th of this month respectively. One person is still in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and the other has recovered and discharged.

One of the students returned to Hong Kong with a few classmates, who had gone home after completing isolation at the quarantine center.

In view of the highly infectious power of the mutant virus, the Health Protection Center has now arranged for them to return to the quarantine center for another 7 days of isolation and observation.
