For more than 12 years, Egyptian director Tamer Ezzat dreamed of presenting a musical film along the lines of old black and white films, until he fulfilled his dream through his film “When We Are Born”, which was shown for the first time in the third session of the El Gouna Film Festival in September 2019. Egypt is in the race to the Oscars for the Best Foreign Film category.

The film, which was co-written by the late screenwriter Nadine Shams, revolves around the story of three young men, each of whom seeks to fulfill his dream: the first wants to find his way in singing, a Christian falls in love with a Muslim youth, and a third works in the field of sports training, and faces a social experiment that changes his life.

The director, Tamer Ezzat, told "Agence France-Presse" that he learned about the nomination of the film to represent Egypt in the Oscars through social media, before he was officially informed of that, expressing his happiness with this nomination, which he considers "a victory for this kind of low-cost films," known in Egypt. Independent cinema.

Singer Amir Eid co-stars in the film, and he wrote, composed and sang it.

The 93rd Academy Awards ceremony will take place on April 25 in Los Angeles.

Every year, the Egyptian Film Selection Committee, formed by the Syndicate of Film Professions, selects a film that was shown in cinema during the past year, to represent Egyptian cinema in the prestigious Oscar competition.

The committee includes a group of filmmakers, including director Amir Ramses, critic Magda Khairallah, critic Majdi al-Tayyib, and critic Tariq Al-Shennawi.
