Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) has banned the sale of New Year's Eve fireworks nationwide.

According to the ministry on Tuesday, “typical” fireworks items such as New Year's Eve bangs and rockets are affected by the ban.

"We have to make sure that we don't set fire to firecrackers and the number of infections explode," explained Seehofer.

"The sales ban on New Year's Eve fireworks protects our hospitals from overload."

With the ordinance, which came into force on Tuesday, Seehofer implemented a decision of the top round of Chancellor and Prime Minister on December 13th.

According to the ban, orders that have already been placed online, for example, are no longer allowed to be delivered to end customers, said the Ministry of the Interior.

According to the Ministry of the Interior, the aim of the regulation is to prevent injuries when fireworks are set off on New Year's Eve in order to relieve the hospitals and emergency clinics, which are already heavily stressed due to the corona pandemic.
