Herta has decided to resume its supply from a pig farm in Allier questioned by the L214 association after an inspection deemed it compliant, the charcuterie brand said in a statement on Monday.

"Herta took note of the press release from the Allier prefecture which" concludes that the breeding is in good condition and that there is no major non-compliance "with regard to the regulations on animal welfare", indicated the brand which deplores "the deviation of the necessary public debate on animal welfare".

High mortality rate

Herta had announced on December 4 to suspend "as a precaution" its supply in this breeding pointed out by the association for the defense of animals in a video entitled "The (dis) taste of simple things", diverting an advertising slogan of the brand.

We saw in particular sows in cages lacking space to give birth or breastfeed their young, with a particularly high mortality rate, according to L214 who had announced that he had filed a complaint for "mistreatment of animals and consumer deception".

The director general denounces propaganda

On Wednesday, the Allier prefecture had indicated that an "unexpected" inspection, carried out by the departmental directorate for the protection of populations (DDCSPP,) had not "observed suffering animals or corpses".

Three inspectors specializing in the pork industry went to the site on December 2 and 3 for control operations.

Herta is 40% owned by Swiss food giant Nestlé and 60% owned by one of the Spanish leaders in the sector, Casa Tarradellas.

Its director general, Arnaud de Belloy, had warned against a possible manipulation of the images by L214 activists, qualified as “anti-breeding professionals” who “carry out their propaganda”.
