The series Caliphate (Caliphate in Swedish) sought to explain why young men were attracted to terrorist groups such as IS in Syria.

At the center was a young Canadian man who described how he did just that and, among other things, carried out macabre executions.

The same man is now on trial in his home country accused of staging a terrorist scam with a series of lies, reports National Public Radio.

According to Canadian authorities, his links to IS are completely fabricated.

His stories, which have been published in several places, do not go together.

Caliphate was praised for his strong storytelling combined with careful journalistic work and won several awards.

The high-profile terrorist reporter behind the podcast has been relocated following an internal investigation.

It was found that a sufficient fact check had not been made.

The editor - in - chief fell for a "story" that was far too good, says NYT's editor-in-chief Dean Baquet to NPR:

- I think we fell for it so much that we did not listen carefully enough when we got evidence that he might have invented things.
