  • In Haute-Garonne, 120 of the 135 nursing homes were affected by the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic.

  • Twenty clusters are still active, which represents more than 500 residents of these establishments positive for Covid-19 in Haute-Garonne.

  • Since October 17, 13% of nursing home residents affected by Covid-19 have died, which is relatively low.

If the second wave of the coronavirus epidemic has ebbed in Haute-Garonne in recent days, nursing homes remain at the heart of the cyclone.

This Friday, "there are still 20 active clusters, some of which concern up to 60 residents," said Hélène Villars, geriatrician at the Toulouse University Hospital, who notably coordinates the Covid-19 mobile intervention teams in the various establishments for people. elderly in the department.

In total, no less than 530 residents are now positive and taken care of, as well as 235 nursing staff.

Since October 17, and the rise of the second wave, 120 of the 135 nursing homes in the department have been affected, sometimes two, three and even for one of them, four times.

“Which means above all that only 15 of them were spared.

We are in the process of questioning them to understand why they were not affected, ”notes the geriatrician.

To explain these exceptions, the remoteness of the Toulouse metropolis is mentioned, the unaffected establishments being far from the areas where the virus circulated the most.

13% of deaths in nursing homes

In fact, relatives and families were also less in contact with the coronavirus.

But they were not spared so far.

Since mid-October, nearly 950 nursing home staff have tested positive and “more than 1,600 residents have been affected by Covid in Haute-Garonne.

We totaled 193 deaths, which represents 13% of cases, ”continues Hélène Villars.

A lower percentage than in the first wave where treatment methods were less advanced.

One thing remains certain for this specialist, the epidemic will regress in retirement homes once part of this population is vaccinated.
