The Ministry of Culture and Youth launched a report on the state of the Arabic language and its future, as the first research report that monitors the state of the Arabic language in several axes, within the activities of the International Day of the Arabic Language, which falls on December 18

The report was prepared according to the directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to be a basis and an expanded study to approach the challenges of the Arabic language in a scientific way that helps develop methods of using it, teaching it and enabling it as a means of communication and acquiring knowledge.

The Minister of Culture and Youth, Noura bint Muhammad Al-Kaabi, emphasized that “the report constitutes a basis and a reference point to assist decision-makers in governments and private institutions at the regional and global level in everything related to the Arabic language .. This report will be the first building block in the framework of a permanent project to study the state of the language. Arabic and work to enhance its presence and use it in its various forms ».

She pointed out that «the ten axes of the report focused on the most important basic issues of concern to decision-makers working in the Arabic language sector, and we chose to include in the report, in addition to research work, opinion articles from various actors in the sector from different parts of the world, in addition to selected case studies within various The Hubs ».

She explained that work is part of the UAE's commitment to its cultural identity and its role as an active contributor to the cultural identity of our region.

For her part, Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) said in her speech in the report: “The Arabic language is one of the most widespread languages ​​in the world, and it is the tongue of more than 422 million people, and it communicates and interacts .. It is also a language. The religion of Islam, which is adhered to by more than a billion and a half billion people, and in it they practice their rituals .. And Arabic is one of the pillars of human civilization, and it is the language of innovation and exploration in the fields of science, medicine, astronomy, mathematics, philosophy and history, throughout the ages .. and it was and is still a bridge of knowledge, across time and space. And over the centuries, along with the rest of the world's cultures, they have contributed to the accumulation of humanity's legacy. ”

She pointed out that the report, “The State of the Arabic Language and its Future, alerts us to our need to collect more data on language-related topics, in order to ensure its preservation, preservation and continuity, and enhance its important presence, which is an increasingly urgent task in our current digital world, as applications of artificial intelligence and technology can contribute in turn with the world's languages. In spreading knowledge, transferring it and making it available ».

The Director-General of UNESCO thanked the UAE for publishing the report, which embodies its great cooperation with the organization in this field and its commitment to improving the role and status of the Arabic language.

This was reflected in UNESCO's decision to designate Sharjah as the World Book Capital in 2019, in recognition of its efforts to spread and encourage the culture of reading.

The report showed the growth of digital publishing platforms in the Arabic language, as the number of novels published on one of the platforms reached 2,600 novels, while the number of views of some novels reached 10 million views .. Arabic is among the most used languages ​​on the Internet, as the approximate number of Arabic users has reached On the Internet, to 237 million users, 17 million tweets in Arabic daily, and 72% of the tweets in the Arab world are in Arabic.

He pointed to a great demand for non-Arabic-speaking learners to learn Arabic in the new worlds, as the numbers indicate that 31,500 university students in the United States have studied Arabic, and the Arabic language ranked third among the most widespread languages ​​in higher education stages, and there are 60 A university that taught Arabic in the United Kingdom, and 46 universities that taught Arabic in China.
