The hunt is finally over.

The prefecture of Deux-Sèvres announced on Thursday that the last wolf still alive among the three who escaped a month ago from a sanctuary in the department has been captured by "trapping".

“Currently under veterinary care, the wolf will be returned to its owners as soon as its state of health allows,” she adds.

According to Béatrice Gérardot, the owner of the Wolf Sanctuary in Frontenay-Rohan-Rohan, from where three wolves had escaped on November 13, the animal was trapped in an enclosure, baited "by a chicken".

This wolf has never left the vicinity of the Sanctuary, unlike his two brothers.

The first was found dead on a road in Charente-Maritime on November 17, probably hit by a vehicle.

The second, suspected of having attacked three farms and killed 18 ewes in one month, was shot dead on December 11 not far from La Rochelle by agents of the French Biodiversity Office (OFB), with prefectural authorization.

A formal notice issued to the sanctuary by the prefecture

The prefecture of Deux-Sèvres said Thursday that it had notified officials of the Wolves Sanctuary of a formal notice which "details the administrative and technical requirements to be implemented so as not to repeat this situation".

For a month, she had set up a capture device around the site, with the help of officers from the OFB, the wolf brigade and the gendarmerie.
