The increase in infections and hospitalizations due to the coronavirus that is taking place this week has set off alarms, especially among health workers who are beginning to suffer the consequences of Black Friday and the Constitution Bridge.

A total of 46 Catalan doctors, the majority responsible for units of the four main hospitals in Barcelona (

Vall d'Hebron

, the

Clinic

, el

Mar

and

Sant Pau

) have made public a manifesto in which they ask for "prudence" before the arrival of vaccines and "the maximum collective rigor" and "sacrifice" to face the third wave of the

coronavirus

.

Under the title of

Seeing the light at the exit of the tunnel but with prudence and in need of the maximum collective rigor

, the doctors say that it is good news that there are several vaccines against the

coronavirus

that "have shown great effectiveness in preventing the disease", but they warn that if there is no "spirit of sacrifice", the third wave of the coronavirus will be lethal.

"Regarding the number of deaths only related to

Covid-19

, sometimes hearing these cruel numbers make us lose perspective (...), but it is as if an Airbus 320 crashes every day in Spain," they warn in the manifesto set.

They emphasize, on the other hand, that the

vaccines

have been tested in thousands of people, so they offer "security and confidence", but ask to continue to maintain distance measures, hand washing and use of a mask to avoid spreading the

virus

.

"We have seen in this second wave of the

pandemic

that physical distancing measures and the continued use of the mask outside the strictly single-family area (bubble)

are essential

to avoid spreading the infection," they underline.

Professionals justify the "significant" improvement in mortality from

Covid-19

in this second wave in which they have "improved knowledge about how to effectively treat the disease."

"Even so", they point out, "the number of people who develop the disease is still very high, as well as the patients who develop sequelae after overcoming the infection, and we still do not know how they will evolve in the medium and long term."

The health workers compare the current health crisis with that of the great European wars of the last century.

He warns that "we are facing this third wave with tired citizens, with economic losses and a crisis that has not been remembered since the end of the European wars of the last century and that affects many families. Health professionals are also fatigued."

And that is why they call to take "very seriously" the epidemiological and sanitary recommendations, so that "the impact of the third wave is as little as possible."

Collateral damage

Professionals regret that little has been said about the collateral health damage to

Covid-19

, related to the other diseases that the population normally has and that due to the effects, especially of the first wave, either they have not been diagnosed or they have been diagnosed late. "

In this sense, they report that so far this year, and with respect to the same period last year,

15% fewer cancer patients

have been

diagnosed

and 40% fewer first visits for mental illnesses have been given.

They

have

also

increased the severity of heart attacks and strokes

"as we have not seen for years", according to the signatories, who attribute this fact to fear of going to health centers, denial or underestimation of symptoms and that "practically all of the health system will dedicate itself to treating a single disease to overcome the first wave of the

pandemic

as well as possible

. "

After recalling "the low percentage of GDP" that is dedicated to public health and that this is "always quite stressed and sometimes at the limit", professionals ask that, when the

pandemic

ends

, "the priorities that society should be defined wants".

"Whether we are at the exit of the tunnel

will depend on how we face the remaining months

with a spirit of sacrifice, complying with the measures of protection and physical distancing, social responsibility and adequate vaccination. The number of planes that crash in the coming months will depend of what we do in the coming weeks and in the

Christmas

holidays

", they conclude.
