On the 21st anniversary of the return of Macao, as a project of the Macao Foundation applied by a Shanghai scholar, the "Research on the National Identity of Macao Residents" undertaken by the Law Institute of the Shanghai Academy of Social Sciences, was in contact with the Basic Law Committee of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress and the Central Committee in Macao Under the guidance and support of the Office, after more than two years of hard work by scholars in Shanghai and Macau, the project has been completed.

According to reports, the empirical research part of the subject adopts the questionnaire survey method. The survey time began in September 2018. The survey subjects covered mainstream social groups of different ages, including the middle and lower-class residents of Macau society.
The results of this project are in the form of research reports, including the main report "Research on the National Identity of Macao Residents" and the appendix "Questionnaire Survey on the National Identity of Macao Residents".
The main report is more than 120,000 words, including four parts: an overview of the national identity; the status quo and analysis of the national identity of Macao residents; the basic reasons and positive effects of the strong national identity of Macao residents; further enhance the national identity of Macao residents Suggestions.
The report pointed out that the reason why Macao residents have a relatively strong sense of national identity is based on the following seven factors: the national sentiment that blood is thicker than water is the historical basis for its formation of a relatively strong sense of national identity; rooted in the Chinese heart of Chinese civilization, It is its cultural gene; the principle of "one country, two systems" and various policies are its institutional conditions; the "people-oriented" governance philosophy is the element of public opinion; the central government and the mainland's care and support for Macao are its psychological guarantee; the SAR government and All sectors of the society earnestly implement the Constitution and the Basic Law are its legal environment; sharing the dignity and honor of the motherland is its emotional motivation.
The report pointed out that the strong sense of national identity of Macao residents has a positive effect on the practice of "one country, two systems", Macao's social and economic prosperity, positive interaction with the mainland of the motherland, and promotion of national integration.
In the recommendations to further enhance the national identity of Macao residents, the report puts forward three levels of measures: fundamental measures; universal measures; and special measures.
Among the universal measures, five suggestions are put forward: strengthen the publicity, education and awareness of the basic strategy of "One Country, Two Systems" and basic national policies; strengthen the study and promotion of the Constitution and Basic Law; the central government should encourage and ensure that Macao residents participate in the management of national affairs ; The SAR government needs to ensure and improve the exercise of residents' rights to participate in the management and supervision of SAR affairs; build a platform for Chinese and Western cultural exchanges, improve the cultural quality of residents, strengthen cultural identity, and realize the return of popular support.
Among the special measures for different groups of people, opinions and suggestions were put forward for people with higher national identity, people with lower national identity, young people, and dissidents.
