  • The Secours populaire de Haute-Garonne is revisiting the advent calendar to offer 24 useful objects to precarious people.

  • He invites residents to prepare these surprise packages, in a shoebox for example.

  • They will be distributed to around 130 people a few days before Christmas.

Give something to those in need, rather than receiving.

It is the idea of Secours Populaire de Haute-Garonne which is launching a revisited advent calendar for this special Christmas.

Deprived of the usual fundraisers and garage sales allowing to put gifts under the most precarious tree because of the coronavirus, the association innovates by offering the public to donate 24 objects in a shoebox intended for the homeless.

"With the Covid-19, we have to renew ourselves," explains Vanessa Garcia, project coordinator at Secours populaire de Haute-Garonne.

Every day, donors have to slip a gift into a shoebox or parcel, because the idea is also to reuse a container.

We shared the operation on social networks in order to spread the word and create a chain of solidarity ”.

The donor must indicate to whom his gift package is addressed and adapt its content: a family, a single person or a child.

The box must contain useful products but can accommodate delicacies such as cakes, candies or chocolates.

For the homeless, warm clothes are welcome such as scarves, gloves and pairs of socks.

Small word and hygiene products

Claudine, a volunteer for the Haut-Garonnaise branch, has just completed her package intended for a man.

“I put in sweets such as cakes and candies but also hygiene products, dressings, cream for minor injuries and a plastic cup, says this 62-year-old retiree.

I also put a card with a little note, hoping that the recipient will take comfort in reading it ”.

Secours populaire has already received a dozen gift packages.

Once the package is complete, donors must drop it off until December 18 at the Secours Populaire de Haute-Garonne headquarters, located at 147 avenue des Etats-Unis in Toulouse.

The revisited advent calendars will be distributed on December 20 to a hundred precarious people in the city center and on December 21 in the premises of the association to around thirty beneficiaries.
