More than 11,500 new cases of contamination by the new coronavirus and 314 deaths have been recorded in the past 24 hours, Public Health France announced on Tuesday, the first day of nighttime curfew after a second confinement which has not reduced as much as desired the epidemic.

11,532 positive tests have been recorded in the past 24 hours, up from 3,063 on Monday, when the numbers for new cases are still at much lower levels, because fewer tests are carried out on weekends.

Blood pressure continues to drop in intensive care

Last week, an average of 12,000 new cases per day were recorded, well above the 5,000 the government had expected to reach by mid-December.

The positivity rate remains stable at 6.2%.

At the hospital, the situation continues to improve slightly: 2,871 patients with the most severe forms of the disease were in the intensive care units on Tuesday, 25 less than the day before.

This indicator, useful for assessing the pressure on hospital services, had fallen below the 3,000 mark last Thursday for the first time since the end of October.

In total, 25,207 patients were hospitalized in France with a diagnosis of Covid-19, down 242 from Monday.

End of confinement and start of curfew

The number of deaths due to Covid-19 since the start of the epidemic in hospitals and medico-social establishments stands at 59,072 deaths.

40,653 deaths have occurred in hospitals, including 314 in the last 24 hours, indicates Public Health France 18,419 have occurred in establishments for the elderly and dependent (Ehpad) and medico-social establishments, or 483 more since the last update of these figures, Friday, completes the government site dedicated to statistics of the epidemic.

Tuesday marks the end of the second confinement, in force since October 30, replaced by a curfew from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m.

On October 29, President Emmanuel Macron affirmed that "our long-term objective is simple: to reduce contamination very strongly, from 40,000 contaminations per day to 5,000".

Excluding the figures published on Monday, France has never fallen below 8,000 new cases per day since this speech.
