Many people want to age at home for as long as their health allows.

But it is not always easy to assess the cost that this represents, unlike a retirement home where you have to pay a specific amount each month.

To try to see more clearly, Retraite.com and the group of companies for seniors Silver Alliance have launched a barometer entitled "How much does it cost to be old in France?"

», Explains a press release.

Concretely, this barometer studied the prices of 25 basic products and services such as mutual insurance, home help, the purchase of adapted chairs or products necessary for dependency.

Expenses related to housing or food were not taken into account because they are too variable depending on the situation.

Costs that increase with the loss of autonomy

The expenditure was then classified according to three income categories (low, medium and high) and according to three age groups (65 to 75 years old, 75 to 85 years old and over 85 years old).

On average, a retiree aged 65 to 75 will have to pay 584 euros per month to age at home, then 740 euros for those aged 75 to 85 and 1,836 euros for those over 85.

For the latter category, expenses can grow very quickly when autonomy decreases, especially with home services, night guards and the implementation of personalized nutrition.

However, staying at home can be a more economical solution than a retirement home.
