Organic less expensive in the supermarket?

This assumption, which some large retailers use to promote themselves, is widely disputed by a study by the consumer association CLCV, published on Monday.

"The organic fruits and vegetables in our survey turn out to be on average as expensive in supermarkets and supermarkets as in specialized organic stores", indicates the CLCV, which established an average price of 3.71 euros per kilo. on average for organic fruits and vegetables in large areas, against 3.48 euros in organic specialty stores on average.

"Compare prices per kilo and favor sales in short circuits"

“Supermarkets therefore do not necessarily seem to be the most interesting for buying organic fruits and vegetables.

We recommend that consumers compare prices per kilo and favor short-circuit sales, which reduces intermediaries and margins and therefore often sales prices ”, concludes the CLCV.

To establish its figures, it was based on a little more than 400 statements established by its activists in 34 departments, between October 17 and 28, including 290 readings in supermarkets and 80 readings in specialized organic stores.

A finding contested by the Federation of Commerce and Distribution (FCD), for which "the absence of price difference between large distribution and specialized commerce remains to be demonstrated on a representative sample".

However, it highlights "additional costs specific to mass distribution", relating in particular to "the separation of conventional and organic".
