A seminar was held in Fukuoka City for medical professionals at the host hospital regarding treatment using ECMO = heart-lung machine for critically ill patients with the new coronavirus.

A total of 40 people from seven hospitals in the prefecture, including doctors, nurses, and clinical engineers, participated in the seminars held by the Fukuoka University Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Center.

The hospitals to which the participants belong are all accepting critically ill patients with the new corona, and the aim of the course is to develop human resources who can engage in treatment using ECMO.

Participants passed water that looked like blood through ECMO to check the handling procedure, and learned how to deal with the situation that would occur in actual treatment, such as what to do when a problem occurs with the device.

As the infection spreads in Fukuoka Prefecture and the number of seriously ill patients increases, it is an urgent issue to expand the acceptance of patients who require ECMO treatment throughout the prefecture.

A male nurse who participated said, "I want to simulate what to do in case of trouble at my own hospital."

Dr. Kodai Hoshino of Fukuoka University Hospital Emergency and Critical Care Center, who served as a lecturer, said, "I want the treatment using ECMO to spread further at the participants' hospitals."
