The German Hospital Society (DKG) expects the number of Covid 19 patients in intensive care units to continue to rise despite the impending lockdown.

“In the next two weeks, the number of infections will initially rise again.

The lockdown only takes effect after a delay, ”said DKG President Gerald Gaß to the editorial network Germany (RND / Monday editions).

"I expect the number of Covid-19 patients in intensive care units to increase from currently around 4,500 to 5,000 at the turn of the year."

The hospitals are already overloaded in some places, said Gass.

Regular patients could no longer be cared for as usual. A selection would then have to take place there.

"But this is not triage in the sense that it had to take place in France and Italy, where doctors had to decide who would still be ventilated and who would not," emphasized the head of the hospital company.

In view of the rapid increase in the number of corona infections and deaths, the federal and state governments agreed on Sunday to largely shut down public life from Wednesday.

The Robert Koch Institute had reported almost 50,000 new infections and more than 800 deaths for the weekend.

Compared to the weekend a week ago, there were a good 7,000 more new infections.
