• Spain: Five charming towns to go to telecommute and not return to the city

  • Discover.Orense and its movie landscapes: a route through Galician 'Hollywood'

The expression browse online makes more sense than ever in the latest virtual project created by Google Arts & Culture, in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Sports of Spain and the Spanish National Commission for the First Around the World.

The Magellan and Elcano expedition now has a digital portal that offers a complete account of this feat and its impact on European understanding of the world at the click of a button.

The First Around the World is a feast of resources to get into the skin of the explorers, who left Seville in 1519 to open a trade route with the Spice Islands to the west.

The journey, as we know, would last 1,084 days, almost three years.

Of the five ships that left (the Trinidad, the San Antonio, the Victoria, the Concepción and the Santiago), only the Victoria, commanded by Juan Sebastián Elcano, would return in 1522. They had circled the world for the first time, providing

evidence empirical evidence that the Earth is round

and that the oceans are interconnected.

'View of the city of Seville', by Sánchez Coello, in M. del Prado.

All these known historical data and the figures of this maritime adventure from the 16th century are collected in the portal that unites all the knowledge available in the 21st century.

The

maps, documents and paintings of the time

can be displayed with amazing resolution.

The navigation instruments that were necessary at the time are also reviewed.

There are explanatory videos, biographies of the protagonists and their motivations, and a

chronology

that plans the milestones of the expedition, from the discovery of the Strait of Magellan to the arrival in

the Moluccas

.

And from the death of the navigator in combat and the appointment of Elcano as captain to the voyage of the survivors back.

The Nao Victoria.

Thus we recall that some

245 crew members

traveled on the ships

and that, among them, there were Spanish, Portuguese, Greeks, French, Italians, Flemish, English, Germans ... that only 35 managed to complete the circumnavigation and that they would end up traveling 46,270 nautical miles, about 85,700 kilometers, that is, more than twice as many kilometers of the earth's circumference, which measures 40,075 km.

Users can also

climb aboard

the Nao Victoria replica and take a

virtual tour, in 360 degrees, on the deck.

Or, if you prefer,

wander

the streets of Seville in 1519.

But the virtual exhibition also tries to explain the consequences of this expedition, such as the cultural, social and commercial exchanges that took place and continue to this day.

Elcano and Magellan.

In this way, it is possible to delve into the towns that they found in their path, as well as the flora and fauna that was discovered along the way and that

globalization of the kitchen

that started with those routes drawn in the 16th century.

In short, a whole sea of knowledge where the user can

dive for hours and hours

.

Not surprisingly, up to 12 Spanish cultural institutions have participated in the project.

From the Naval Museum to the Royal Academy of Gastronomy and from the Elkano Fundazioa to the State Archives.
