According to a media report, the federal and state governments will advise on further steps in the corona pandemic on Sunday morning.

A phone call from Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) and the Prime Minister of the federal states is planned for 10 am, reported the "Rheinische Post", citing government circles.

In view of the further massive increase in the corona numbers in Germany, more and more prime ministers are urging a nationwide lockdown before Christmas.

"The lockdown must come as soon as possible," demanded North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) on Friday in Düsseldorf.

He had also spoken out in favor of holding the crisis summit of the 16 country leaders and the Chancellor on Saturday.

Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU) and Kiel Prime Minister Daniel Günther (CDU) also pushed for a nationwide lockdown.

Medical representatives and Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) made similar statements.

The number of new infections and corona deaths every day rose to new highs in Germany on Friday.

The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 29,875 new infections with the novel coronavirus within one day and 598 new deaths.

This exceeded the previous record of 23,679 new infections on Thursday and 590 deaths within 24 hours on Wednesday.
