British media reported yesterday, citing a statement issued by the husband of British actress Barbara Windsor, that the actress, best known for the role of "Peggy Mitchell" in the series "East Enders", passed away at the age of 83.

"It is with great sadness that I can confirm that my dear wife Barbara passed away Thursday night in a London nursing home," said Scott Mitchell, Windsor's husband, in a statement carried by the media.

"Her death was caused by her suffering from Alzheimer's disease (senile dementia), and Barbara died in the end peacefully, and she spent the past seven days next to her," he said.

Windsor was diagnosed with the disease in 2014 and moved into a nursing home this year.

She first appeared in the role of "Peggy Mitchell" in the series in 1994, and she stopped working on the series for health reasons in 2003 before returning to it in 2005.

Windsor left the long-running series in 2009, saying she wanted to spend more time with her husband, with whom she was related in 2000.

Before "East Enders", Windsor was mostly known as a comedian.

Her first appearance as an actress was in the 1954 movie "The Bells of St. Trinian".

The first appearance was in the "Bells of Saint Trinian" in 1954.
