The Diotis company manufactures designer interior furniture 100% recycled and recyclable based on HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) -

  • These three Arcachonnais use recycled HIPS, high impact polystyrene, for the manufacture of their tables.

  • This resistant material comes from factory plastic, which would go straight to the trash without this die.

  • Diotis hopes to be able to move quickly to the manufacture of other objects, in particular stairs.

Recycled HIPS furniture, will it soon be the latest chic?

In any case, this is what three young people from Arcachon are hoping for, who have just launched their brand, Diotis, which notably offers high-impact polystyrene coffee tables, HIPS in English.

HIPS, whose particularity is resistance, is a material that has been used for a very long time in various fields.

Recycled HIPS, on the other hand, is quite innovative.

These 1mx1m polystyrene sheets are manufactured in a factory located in the Netherlands, which recycles tons of plastic waste from industry, and which would go directly to the trash without this new channel.

The plates are then taken to Diotis' workshops in Arès, where Mathieu Alaphilippe, the manual of the band who worked in the carpentry, will polish them to give them a shiny appearance, then assemble them.

“I had to relearn the carpenter trade to work with these plates, because they are rather difficult to cut,” he says.

"Very aware of pollution due to plastic"

The Saphir coffee table is thus made from coils used in industry, which are crushed and recycled.

"We are really at the source to prevent these materials from ending up in the trash" insists Mathieu.

A 50x50 table is equivalent to 3,850 recycled plastic bags.

The three childhood friends, launched Diotis last July.

“The three of us are children of the basin, and very aware of plastic pollution, and we wanted to tackle the problem at the source,” summarizes Bryan Dounon, who previously worked in international finance.

Why, therefore, not seek to reuse the tons of plastic that can be collected on the Gironde coast?

“It's more difficult to recover the plastic that we find on our beaches, there would be a sorting to be done because some materials do not go with others, so we turned to this solution” explains Mathieu.

Starting price at 500 euros

Diotis initially sells tables, directly to individuals, or via architects and designers.

“The table has the merit of highlighting the product, which is very aesthetic,” emphasizes Bryan.

And then a table can be kept over time, so we give plastic life back, but not for a short time.

»Prices start at 500 euros for the 50x50 model.

The three entrepreneurs also offer other types of made-to-measure and made-to-order furniture, such as chests of drawers, desks, shelves, etc. They also wish to move very quickly to other more important creations, in particular stairs.

Louis Reigniez, the last sidekick, also underlines that “we are also looking at the way in which we could organize a more local plastic recycling sector, and thus avoid the transport of the goods from the Netherlands.
