A commission of experts from the US FDA has recommended emergency approval of the corona vaccine from the Mainz-based company Biontech and its US partner Pfizer.

The panel voted on Thursday in a public meeting for approval in the USA, which could now be decided quickly.

The vaccine has already been approved in the UK, Canada and other countries, and the EU is currently under review for emergency approval.

Because of the high number of corona infections, the French are not allowed to celebrate the turn of the year outdoors: The government imposed a curfew on New Year's Eve from 8 p.m., Prime Minister Jean Castex announced on Thursday evening.

The opening of cinemas, theaters and museums, originally planned for next Tuesday, will be postponed until at least January.

"We have not yet reached the end of the second wave," stressed Prime Minister Castex in a press conference.

The nocturnal curfew comes into effect next Tuesday and, unlike initially considered, starts at 8 p.m. instead of 9 p.m.

Only on Christmas Eve are people allowed to move freely and go to the traditional midnight mass.

Some corona easing is also being postponed, as Castex further said: In addition to cultural institutions such as theaters, this also affects places of worship.

The number of participants in mass celebrations should not be increased for the time being, in churches and mosques a row between believers must remain free.

At Christmas, people should be able to travel to their families as planned.

Castex warned the citizens to celebrate in small groups with a maximum of six adults.

Everything must be done "to prevent a third lockdown in the coming months," he stressed.

The French should also forego major celebrations on New Year's Eve.

Private firecrackers are not allowed in many places anyway.

There are centrally organized fireworks in Paris and other cities.
