The claim of Orense as a

film set

is not new.

Both the capital and the province have been linked to the Seventh Art for decades.

Different corners of its territory have hosted the filming of several films, in addition to celebrating the

Ourense International Film Festival

(OUFF) for 25 years.

There are numerous places in the province that have been used for filming movies of all kinds.

From

Cotolay

(1965) by José Antonio Nieves Conde or

El Bosque del Lobo

(1970) by Pedro Olea to

Semper Xonxa

(1989), the

first fiction feature film

shot in Galicia and entirely in Galician.

Its director, Chano Piñeiro, chose for his film the town of

Santoalla

, in Petín, a small town where only

one family

lived

and which was revolutionized by this production.

In the 1990s, it was the turn of

La ley de la frontera

(1995), directed by Adolfo Aristarain, and starring Federico Luppi and Aitana Sánchez-Gijón, who shot scenes in the

Baixa Limia region,

or

La lengua de las butterflies

(1998) by

José Luis Cuerda,

which made the

town of Allariz

a fundamental element.

Villa de Allariz, one of José Luis Cuerda's favorites.

These titles set the precedent for bearing the name of the province throughout the world.

And it is that in Orense

dream landscapes,

unique thermal areas,

monasteries

full of history,

fictional

forests

and many

charming villas

that are perfect to enter a movie route meet.

An 'ourensano' from Albacete

José Luis Cuerda,

who died last February, was a man from

Ourense

from Albacete.

The director fell in love with this land during the filming of

The Tongue of Butterflies

.

So much so that he decided to buy a property in Allariz, one of the

most beautiful towns in Spain

.

And he even created his own winery in the

O Ribeiro wine region

, where some of the best Galician wines come from.

A plaque in his honor has just been placed in a corner of the

Plaza Mayor

in Orense, one of the

few slopes in all of Europe.

This place is the heart of the historic center of the city, in addition to the setting that served Cuerda to record his second film from

Ourense

,

Los girasoles ciegos

(2008), which would give him a new Goya award and which was chosen to represent Spain in the Oscar.

They also served as

the backdrop for the filming of

The Blind Sunflowers

the

monasteries of San Clodio

(Leiro) and

Montederramo

.

In addition, several outdoor scenes were shot in the province, specifically in the mountains of the municipality of

A Peroxa.

Because in Orense they have

all possible scenarios

gathered in a few kilometers.

Scenarios for all tastes

Can you tour the province of Orense by taking a movie

route

?

Of course.

In recent years, there have been numerous audiovisual productions that have landed in this Galician region due to its

cultural, architectural, ethnographic and natural heritage.

Some of the films in which you can see different corners of

Ourense

are:

'The disorder you leave', Netflix miniseries.

  • To Esmorga

    (2014).

Based on the homonymous book by Eduardo Blanco Amor, this film by director Ignacio Vilar takes place through the

    old town

    and the surroundings of Orense.

    In fact, there is a

    signposted route

that runs through the main stages, marked with ceramic plates that reproduce pieces of the history of Cibrán, Bocas and Milhomes in places such as the famous As Burgas fountain, the Praza do Correxidor or the Alameda de Ourense .

  • Elisa and Marcela

    (2019).

    The director

    Isabel Coixet

was in charge of adapting this story about the

    first homosexual marriage

    in the history of Spain

    for the big screen

    .

The film, shot between La Coruña and Orense, had

    Celanova

and his monastery of San Salvador as its central axis.

But it also reached the towns of

    Moldes

    and

    Pazos de Arenteiro,

    in Boborás.

  • O Que Arde

    (2019).

One of the movies of the year.

Oliver Laxe captivated everyone with this work that tells the special relationship of a mother and a fiery son who live in the mountains of Lugo.

The images of the fires that were used were taken, to a large extent, at the exits of the forestry brigades from the

Allariz-Maceda, Orense and Terra de Celanova districts.

  • Oblivion and Leon

    (2020).

    Cenlle, Arnoia or Ribadavia

are some of the places where the sequel to

    León y Olvido

    was filmed

    .

The director Xavier Bermúdez was finally able to shoot his most

    Ourense

    film

and finish off the story of the two brothers that began in 2004.

  • Live is life

    (2021).

    Esgos and, specifically, the

monastery of San Pedro de Rocas

(one of the most visited places in the

    Ribeira Sacra

) hosted a few months ago the filming of

    Live is life

, the new film by the Monfortine director Dani de la Torre and which has a script scored by Albert Espinosa.

  • Brothers-in-law

    (2021).

    This comedy by

    Toño López

    from

    Ourense

    has the city of

    Orense

    as the main setting.

With a premiere scheduled for 2021 and with the participation of RTVE, it is expected to be one of the films of the year.

    Other corners such as

    San Cibrao, Allariz

    and the

    O Ribeiro

    region

are also very present in this new film.

  • The mess you leave

    (2020).

It is not a movie but a

    miniseries

but it deserves to be cited.

    The mess you leave

is one of Netflix's bets to end the year.

It is based on the novel by Carlos Montero, writer and screenwriter of series such as

    Physics or Chemistry

    and

    Elite

    .

Celanovés by birth, there was no better corner than his

    native

    Celanova

to give life to fiction and host the institute that serves as the central axis of the plot starring Bárbara Lennie and Inma Cuesta.

He has also shot scenes in

    Ribadavia

and in the unique landscape of

    the Sil Canyon

    .
