  • The ecological mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet announced on Friday that the city is associated with the appeals filed against the establishment of an Amazon platform in Colombier-Saugnieu.

  • One way, according to him, to assert his support for local businesses and local employment.

"It goes through the refusal of this Amazon warehouse," said the elected official.

It is certainly not a coincidence of the calendar.

On this Black Friday Friday, the ecological mayor of Lyon Grégory Doucet announced that the city was joining the appeals filed by several associations against the establishment of an Amazon platform near Saint-Exupéry airport.

The e-commerce giant wants to open a huge 140,000 m2 warehouse in Colombier-Saugnieu.

A project challenged locally in court by the Fracture and Acenas associations, rejected by the Lyon administrative court in 2019. The case must be judged on appeal soon.

"In this period of crisis, it is fundamental to anchor our economic choices," said Grégory Doucet this Friday to the press.

Amazon's development model is not the one for which we were elected ”.

The city will therefore be associated with appeals, which also joined the Confederation of traders in France, according to details provided by the town hall.

“For every Amazon job created, four to five jobs are also destroyed.

(…) Supporting local commerce means rejecting this Amazon warehouse ”, added the elected ecologist, concerned that“ the symbolic strength of the commitment of a city like Lyon, the third largest city in France,

can lead to the mobilization of other public and private actors in the ecological transition ”.

"There is an urgent need to protect our local shops"

"There is an urgent need to make economic choices and protect our local businesses which create jobs locally," said Grégory Doucet, relying, to illustrate his point, on a study published this Friday from the pen of two economists.

Ano Kuhanathan and Florence Mouradian notably underline that the expansion of e-commerce over the past ten years has led to the loss of 81,000 jobs in the non-food trade in France, 79,000 in Germany and 44,000 in Spain.

According to their projections "68,000 jobs could still disappear in the future in France," said the mayor of Lyon.

“My role is to create the conditions for a responsible and sustainable economy (…) Our businesses have an essential role.

They animate the district, give daily pleasure.

I take the side of defending our local businesses and local employment ”.
