Recently, the reporter visited the water source of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Diversion-Danjiangkou Reservoir across Henan and Hubei provinces.

The canal head hub of the mid-line project is located in Xichuan County, Nanyang City, Henan Province. Through the opening of the canal head to release water, a canal of clear water starts from here, using the altitude difference to slowly flow northward, with a distance of more than 1,000 kilometers, naturally flowing all the way to Beijing, Tianjin, Hebei and other places.

The canal head hub is also the auxiliary dam of the Danjiangkou Reservoir and the landmark building of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project. It is 1432 kilometers long, including 1277 kilometers from the head of the canal to Beijing and 155 kilometers from Xushui, Hebei to Tianjin.

The starting point of the middle route of the South-to-North Water Transfer Project is 140 meters above sea level, and the end point is 45 meters above sea level at Tuancheng Lake in Beijing. Taking advantage of the 95 meters above sea level difference between the two places, the high-quality water source of Danjiangkou Reservoir flows to Beijing through open channels.

According to reports, the South-to-North Water Diversion Middle Route Canal Head Project started construction in December 2009, and the water was officially opened in December 2014.

The designed flow rate of the canal head gate section is 350 cubic meters per second, the increased flow rate is 420 cubic meters per second, and the flow rate to Beijing Tuancheng Lake is 70 cubic meters per second.

The average annual water transfer volume of the first phase of the canal head pivot project is 9.5 billion cubic meters, and the long-term average annual water transfer volume can reach the designed 13 billion cubic meters to alleviate the water shortage in North China.
