One of the last true conservatives was undoubtedly the English Lord quoted by Huxley, who wrote a letter to the Times in 1940
wrote, in which he suggested ending the war with a compromise (which, as Huxley writes, "otherwise so conservative newspaper" refused to print the letter).
Metaphorically speaking, I would say that the conservative tends to idealize society into a perfect machine that makes the transition from one generation to the next with minimal effort, trying to alleviate suffering and compulsion in the same way reduce how one tries in mechanics to minimize friction.
