Under the guidance of his fourth uncle Deng Erya, Rong Geng chose Jinshi as the direction of his studies. It took six years to complete the first draft of "The Compilation of Jinwen".

Rong Geng, a middle school graduate, was admitted as a graduate student by the Institute of Chinese Studies at Peking University. Ma Heng was his tutor.

  Ma Heng is a gold-stone archaeologist, calligraphy and seal carver, and the second president of Xiling Yinshe. He is known as the forerunner of modern Chinese archaeology.

He guided Rong Geng to combine inscription research with artifact archaeology.

After graduation, Rong Geng successively served as a professor at Yenching University and Peking University.
