American actor Dave Prowse, who played the role of Darth Vader in the original

Star Wars

trilogy, has died at the age of 85, the

BBC

reports

Sunday.

The British actor has died after a short illness.

The former bodybuilder was best known for his role as Darth Vader in the first three parts of the

Star Wars

films.

Prowse was cast as Vader due to his large physique.

However, because of his British accent, Vader's voice was spoken by someone else, the actor James Earl Jones.

About two meters tall Prowse was a bodybuilder and weightlifter until his first role in a James Bond film in 1967.

Prowse was Frankenstein's Creature in the movie

Casino Royale

He also returned as Frankenstein in other films.
