Bárcabo

, has won the Tree of the Year contest in Spain and will now compete for the European title

Tree of the Year 2021

.

In the contest,

unique specimens

are awarded

for their age, size, beauty, but also for their history and for their emotional relationship with people.

From February 1 to 28, 2021, a new online voting period will open among all European candidates and on April 23, the name of the winner of the European Tree of the Year will be announced in Brussels.

with more than a thousand years of life

, has prevailed over the other ten Spanish applicants with 9,929 votes, 30.45% of the total.

The chosen tree is part of

the Aragon coat of arms

.

In its upper left part there is an oak tree on which a red Latin cross appears.

According to legend, the inhabitants of Jaca had come from the monastery of San Juan de la Peña to Aínsa to

reconquer this territory from the Saracens

.

When the Christians were losing the battle, a red cross appeared on an oak (holm oak) and then the fortunes of the battle changed.

Since then the holm oak and the red cross are the symbol of Sobrarbe ('on a tree').

On June 27, with the motto "Aragon, those of us who are missing", 731 carracks were planted, one in each Aragonese municipality, in a unitary act in honor of the victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The holm oak was chosen to pay this tribute to the victims, but also as a symbol of gratitude to the health workers and nursing homes, the State security forces and bodies, essential services and all those who guaranteed the food chain .

SYMBOL OF ARAGONESE IDENTITY

The candidacy of the Lecina holm oak was promoted by Aragonese MEP Isabel García Muñoz (PSOE), member of the Transport and Tourism Commission.

As he explained, he opted for a specimen of holm oak "because it is

a tree much loved in Aragon

and a symbol of the Aragonese identity, which links past and present of the Community; it is on our shield and is an expression of pact, loyalty and freedom Furthermore, it has become a symbol of the fight against the covid-19 pandemic. "

In Bárcabo, a town of

just one hundred inhabitants

, they are very proud of their holm oak and very happy to have been chosen Tree of the Year in Spain.

The mayor, Carmen Lalueza, hopes that the contest will serve as a tourist promotion "so that the whole area is better known and more visitors can come."

The tree can be visited at the entrance to the town and is "perfectly signposted".

The European Tree of the Year contest

was created in 2011

as a continuation of the popular popular Tree of the Year contest that in the Czech Republic for a long time was organized by the Alliance Foundation (Nadace Partnerství).

The aim is to highlight the interesting old trees as an important natural and cultural heritage that we should appreciate and protect.

Unlike other contests, it is not beauty, size or age that matters but history and

connection with people

.

The organizers look for "trees that have become an integral part of the community in its broadest sense."
