The government is considering the construction of a toll motorway between Poitiers and Limoges "which is currently lacking in the national motorway network", the Ministry of Transport said on Saturday.

The Minister Delegate for Transport Jean-Baptiste Djebbari "asked the prefect of the region (of New Aquitaine, Fabienne Buccio) that the feasibility studies of a motorway concession be continued," said a spokesperson.

“The preferred scenario at this stage consists of upgrading the entire axis to 2 × 2 lanes, with the exception of non-current engineering structures, comprising eight interchanges along the route and based on the sections already improved from the existing RN147, ”he said.

A project out of the hat

The exchanges that Jean-Baptiste Djebbari - himself elected from the Limoges region - had with the institutions concerned "made it possible to confirm the interest of local socio-economic actors to continue the preliminary steps towards the realization of a Poitiers-Limoges bar, which is lacking today in the national motorway network, ”argued the spokesperson.

The file has been defended for several years by elected officials, chambers of commerce and professional organizations in the region, but a motorway between Poitiers and Limoges was not part of the government's plans, as defined by the report of the Infrastructure Orientation Council of 2018. The ministry must “soon” seize the National Commission for Public Debate (CNDP) and the Environmental Authority, according to the spokesperson.
