Actress Laverne Cox -

Starface

Violence against transgender people is a scourge that is not talked about enough, but which must end.

This is supported by Laverne Cox, star of

Orange Is The New Black

, who called on the authorities to better protect the community, especially in schools.

“I would like the media to talk about solutions to end violence against transgender people.

Helping to improve the material conditions of trans people through employment and housing opportunities could reduce violence against trans people.

We also need to contextualize violence against trans into that of intimate partner violence.

We need to create a world where men who are attracted to trans women are no longer deeply stigmatized.

That's a huge reason trans women die, ”the actress told HuffPost.

Recognize identity

Laverne Cox notably supports the Citibank initiative, which allows transgender or non-binary people to use the name they choose on their accounts and bank cards.

This measure was previously only possible for people who have taken the step to change their name legally.

“When I changed my name legally twenty years ago and received my new ID card with the name I chose, it gave me a lot of power.

I know that as a trans person, having identity documents that do not correspond to who we are can also create a security problem, ”she explains.

Laverne Cox has launched the True Name action, which aims to promote the recognition of names chosen by transgender people to represent themselves.
