The world famous Austrian village of Fucking will change its name to Fugging from January 1.
The residents were tired of their place name signs being stolen, Austrian media report Thursday.
Fucking, a village of about a hundred inhabitants, was often in the news by its name in the past.
It has no meaning in German, but in English it is a curse.
Residents of the village had been pushing for a name change for years, although the name was also taken advantage of. Last year, activists used the village's name in the fight for climate protection. They placed placards above and below the place name signs, so that "Our Climate Is Fucking Important" could be read.
