The post had been vacant since the landing in January of Ségolène Royal.

The diplomat and writer Olivier Poivre d'Arvor was appointed Wednesday “ambassador of the poles and maritime issues”, according to a decision of the Council of Ministers.

Ségolène Royal, appointed by Emmanuel Macron in 2017 but very critical of power, was dismissed from her post at the end of January 2020 after in particular a controversy over the use of the means made available to her, for which a preliminary investigation by the National Financial Prosecutor's Office was been open.

The government then assured that it would be replaced "soon", emphasizing the importance of the poles and melting ice in climate change.

Responsible for "maritime issues"

While her title was ambassador "in charge of international negotiations for the arctic and antarctic poles", that of Olivier Poivre d'Arvor evokes, in addition to the poles, "maritime issues".

The brother of the former star presenter Patrick Poivre d'Arvor was notably director of Radio France Culture between 2010 and 2015, then French Ambassador to Tunisia.

France has around twenty thematic ambassadors, responsible for climate negotiations, migration or foreign cultural action.

Michel Rocard was the first to occupy the post of pole ambassador in 2009.
