Mads Mikkelsen

will be the replacement for

Johnny Depp

in the third film in the

Fantastic Beasts

saga

, after Warner Bros. studios expelled the actor for losing a trial against a medium that accused him of mistreating his ex-wife Amber Heard.

Mikkelsen (

Hannibal

,

Doctor Strange

) will play the character of Gellert Grindelwald in the saga derived from the

Harry Potter

universe

, whose new premiere is expected on July 15, 2022, the Hollywood newspaper Deadline reported this Friday.

Depp confirmed a few weeks ago his departure from the franchise.

"I let you know that Warner Bros has asked me to resign from my role as Grindelwald in 'Fantastic Beasts', and that I have respected and accepted that request," he said in a statement on Instagram.

The actor had participated in the first two installments:

Fantastic Animals and Where to Find Them

(2016) and

Fantastic Animals: The Crimes of Grindelwald

(2018).

The High Court of London ruled in early November that the account of the

alleged assaults

committed by Depp published in 2018 is "substantially true", a conclusion that the actor has assured that he intends to appeal.

Depp, 57, filed a lawsuit against News Group Newspaper (NGN), owner of

"The Sun"

and its CEO, Dan Wootton, considering that the article is defamatory.

"The surreal judgment of the British court will not change my fight to tell the truth", declared today the protagonist of films such as

Eduardo Scissorhands

(1990) and

Pirates of the Caribbean

(2003).

"My determination remains strong and

I intend to prove that the accusations against me are false.

My life and my career will not be defined by this point in time," added Depp, a three-time Oscar nominee.
