Euthanasia for a New Zealand "leper" who entered Germany illegally

A news report said today, Tuesday, that it was necessary to end the life of a "gecko", who had been smuggled from New Zealand to Germany, by subjecting it to euthanasia.

The "gecko", which was called "Manawa", was smuggled out of New Zealand in 2010, and entered Germany illegally and was seized and returned to the country in 2016.

Because of concerns about biosafety on the environment in New Zealand, it was Manawa must be kept in the Otago Museum, where it was placed inside a glass container in which wildlife was placed for the purpose of viewing or studying.

The museum announced in a statement today that "Manawa" was subjected to euthanasia due to his poor health.

The museum said that "Manawa" has become "in increasingly poor health," and has been transferred to "Dunedin" Wildlife Hospital for treatment.

And because his age was not known, it is possible that his health condition has worsened due to his natural aging.
