A Russian studio, producer of the

film

Leviathan

in Cannes, announced on Monday the launch of the first Russian TV series co-produced with an American video-on-demand platform, which will tell the true story of a Siberian serial killer.

"We are launching a first in Russia, the co-production of a series jointly with the American platform Topic, created by the company First Look Media", told AFP the director of the studio Non stop Production, Alexandre Rodnianski.

A series based on real events

Based on true events,

snowball earth

( "Frozen Land") tells the story of Dmitri Lebed, a serial killer who was posing as a taxi driver and was sentenced in April 2019 to life imprisonment for murder and the rape of at least eleven young women between 2012 and 2017.

"The story of the killer in eight episodes will be told not through the eyes of investigators, nor those of his victims, but those of a woman who loved him and did not want to believe in his guilt," said Alexandre Rodnianski .

The series, due for release on Topic in 2022, will be directed by Valeria Gaï Germanica, whose first feature film,

They will die all except me

, received the Camera d'Or Special Mention at Cannes in 2008.

Video on demand has exploded in Russia

Non stop Production has produced several films by one of the most renowned Russian filmmakers, Andreï Zviaguintsev, including

Faute d'Amour

which won the Jury Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. His previous film also produced by Non stop Production,

Léviathan

, received the Screenplay Award at Cannes in 2014.

Video on demand has exploded in Russia and the rest of the world since the start of the coronavirus pandemic and the containment measures taken across the world.

Many companies have entered the niche like Topic, available only in the United States and Canada.

The group is a subsidiary of the First Look Media company, which belongs to the Franco-American billionaire Pierre Omidyar, founder of eBay.
