  • The League against cancer has been concerned about the care of patients since the start of the health crisis.

  • In Rennes, the Eugène Marquis center tries to reassure patients and affirms that the continuity of care is well assured.

  • Only the activity of reconstructive plastic surgery has been put on hold within the center for the fight against cancer.

The decline of the Covid-19 epidemic seems to be confirmed for a few days with the peak which is now "behind us", according to the Director General of Health Jérôme Salomon.

Despite encouraging signs, the pressure remains very strong on hospitals.

This has been the case since the start of the health crisis with a chain of care that has been completely turned upside down.

During the first confinement in the spring, two million acts, examinations or operations were thus postponed or canceled, according to a study published by the Journal du Dimanche.

The second confinement has only accentuated this trend with all the indicators that have gone "to the red", according to the League against cancer, which is sounding the alarm.

"The inadequacies of care for people with cancer noted during the first confinement are repeated during the second, worsening their situation", worries the association, based on numerous testimonies.

A Covid-19 unit open in the center

The situation is however contrasted according to the regions.

At the Eugène Marquis center in Rennes, the main center for the fight against cancer in Brittany, patient care is even "totally optimal", according to Professor Renaud de Crevoisier.

"The quality of care is the same as before the onset of the crisis," reassures the new director, appointed on October 1 for a period of five years.

The health context is still shaking up the daily life of the center where the activity of plastic reconstruction surgery has been put on hold for the moment.

A month ago, at the height of the second wave, the cancer center also participated in the national effort by opening a Covid-19 unit consisting of eight beds.

"We did not have the expertise at the start to take care of these patients but we organized ourselves to play the card of solidarity", assures the oncologist, specialist in radiotherapy.

The center calls on patients not to cancel their consultations

During this period, all breast cancer surgeries were transferred to the Sagesse clinic to allow the installation of the Covid unit, which today welcomes two patients.

Everything should soon be back to normal at the Eugène Marquis center, which tries to reassure the sick and invites them not to cancel their consultations.

"The anxiety of the epidemic adds stress to patients already affected by the disease," said Professor Renaud de Crevoisier.

But everything has been put in place to limit the risk of infection with very strict filtering at the entrance ”.
