From April to the end of October, hospitals in North Rhine-Westphalia reinstated employees in around 3560 cases for whom quarantine was still required after contact with corona.

According to a recommendation by the Robert Koch Institute, medical practices and hospitals can do this "in the case of relevant staff shortages" under certain circumstances such as freedom from symptoms.

The NRW Ministry of Health named the numbers in a response to a small request from the SPD parliamentary group in the NRW state parliament, about which the "WAZ" had previously reported.

Since not all clinics had given this information, there could have been more cases.

She was “shocked” by the “high number”, said SPD parliamentary deputy Lisa-Kristin Kapteinat.

During the period mentioned, the situation was still relatively well under control.

"I would have expected a health minister, who is also a labor minister, to take care of the medical staff more intensively," she said, referring to NRW health minister Karl-Josef Laumann (CDU).

In its response, the ministry pointed out that in the pandemic, different goals competed with each other when dealing with contact persons among medical staff: on the one hand, the risk of transmission should be minimized, and on the other hand, acute medical care and the maintenance of capacities must be guaranteed.
