The mystery surrounding the death of Cachou, the bear found in April 2020 in the Val d'Aran, close to the French border, has been dissipated since a Spanish rural policeman was charged with poisoning.

The restless and voracious male did not die in an accident.

No more, it is obvious, that the anonymous bear discovered killed by bullets in Ariège two months later.

These two "samples" in the Ursine population of the Pyrenees are therefore not natural, which is why the collective of associations Cap Ours is asking for the rapid replacement of these two bears.

European commitments

The friends of the bears are based on the very official 2018-2028 bear plan which provides for the replacement of plantigrades “which have died prematurely from anthropogenic causes [linked to human activity]”.

“Remember that each bear is not subservient to a country, but to a cross-border population.

In fact, Cachou frequented both sides of the massif.

Let us also remember that Catalonia was funded by Europe for a Life Bear program concerning the protection of this species, and that Spain must meet the same obligations as France with regard to the restoration of the population, ”the associations insist.

They promise to "ensure that the European commitments of the two countries are respected, in particular the rapid replacement of these two bears".
