The state of natural disaster declared in Guadeloupe and Martinique

Several municipalities have submitted files for the recognition of the state of natural disaster.

Overseas Minister Sébastien Lecornu announced on Tuesday November 17 that a state of natural disaster would be declared for several municipalities in Martinique and Guadeloupe, hit by severe weather in recent days.

"National solidarity will obviously be there for this very painful disaster for Martinique, Guadeloupe, for the whole of the French nation," said the Minister to the National Assembly, in response to a question from the deputy of Martinique Serge Letchimy (related to PS).

"Are we going to take the so-called natural disaster procedure?"

The answer is yes ”, he assured.

The minister also specified that the examination of the files submitted by the municipalities affected by the bad weather would be done "this afternoon by the general direction of Civil Security".

The minister also indicated that "the solidarity fund for the Overseas Territories could be requested for the various goods which are not insured".

Floods and land subsidence

For Martinique, he detailed the names of the municipalities that had already submitted the files.

These are Gros Morne, Sainte-Marie, Le Marigot Le Robert and La Trinité.

For Guadeloupe, he said that seven municipalities had undertaken the same approach, without giving the names.

Bad weather caused impressive rises in water levels and land subsidence in Martinique, damaging part of the road network.

The prefect Stanislas Cazelle launched last Thursday the procedure for recognizing the state of natural disaster.

In Guadeloupe, the passage of a tropical wave also caused flooding, with material damage.
