$ 10 million compensation for a family who had a baby girl because of a "flu shot"

A Seattle federal judge awarded $ 10 million to the family of a severely disabled child who was born after a nurse gave the mother a flu shot instead of a contraceptive injection.

The "Seattle Times" newspaper reported that US District Judge Robert Lasnick granted the girl last week $ 7.5 million for her medical, educational and other expenses, in addition to $ 2.5 million in compensation for her parents.

After an experiment earlier this year, Lasnik found that mother Yesene Pacheco did not want to become pregnant and would not have conceived in 2011 if the nurse had given her the correct injection, according to ABC News.

The family’s lawyer described the case in court documents as “an illegal pregnancy” and a “illegal life” case.

They said the issue was a fierce battle, and they criticized the government for its refusal to accept responsibility at first.

Pacheco, a Salvadoran refugee who moved to the United States when she was 16, went to the clinic to get a quarterly injection of a hormone used for birth control.

The court found that the nurse was administering the flu vaccine all day in the clinic and did not verify the pachico injection, and administered the vaccine instead of the hormone injection.

Pacheco didn't figure out what was wrong until she called to set her next appointment, more than two months later.

By this time, she was already pregnant.

The girl is now 8 years old.

According to court documents, she suffers from a birth defect that has led to cognitive delays, slowed speech skills, epilepsy, vision problems and other complications.
