The Paris Council opened on Tuesday with a tribute to Samuel Paty.

With speeches by Anne Hidalgo and group presidents but also a minute of silence.

Then elected officials voted for a place in the capital to bear the name of the teacher beheaded on October 16.

During this vote, elected ecologists, who belong to the majority, abstained, causing an outcry.

The Socialists as well as all the elected representatives of the opposition voted in favor of the name of a place, determined later in consultation with his family, in homage to Samuel Paty.

But not the elected EELV.

A five-year deadline for environmentalists

Denouncing an "infamous crime", the president of the environmental group, Fatoumata Koné, stressed that "his assassination reminds us to what extent the school must be sanctuary, protected from controversies in the adult world."

"These terrible events affect us all", however, "we must at all costs guard against a reaction guided by emotion which should in no way guide our political decisions", she pleaded to explain the abstention from his group.

It is necessary "necessarily a name, a place, a place, a denomination in the name of Samuel Paty, we all agree", underlined the elected one, but "we regret that the regulation is not respected on the question of denominations ”.

The elected representative thus recalled that "a deliberation of December 9, 1938 specifies that it is not authorized to name a route in the name of a person who has been deceased for less than five years".

“This regulation is not respected at any council,” regretted Fatoumata Koné.

"Everyone takes their responsibilities"

"I regret your position and I think that invoking a problem of internal rules, [...] in the face of an event as major as the beheading of a professor in the context of an Islamist terrorist attack, does not allow us to find each other », Replied Anne Hidalgo dryly, to the applause of the elected officials present.

“Everyone takes their responsibilities”, concluded the socialist mayor, regularly in delicacy with the elected ecologists of his majority since his re-election.

The mayor (LR) of the 17th arrondissement, Geoffroy Boulard, denounced on Twitter a "shameful attitude of the green elected representatives of the majority of Anne Hidalgo unable to support the name of a place in memory of Samuel Paty".

"This vote shows that the fight against Islamism is not unanimous in Paris," said the elected, before urging "Anne Hidalgo [to] clarify her alliances urgently".
